Writing in Scrivener for GitHub Pages

This just in Top

Appendices and Ephemera

I’m just noting here odd snippets of information and events, so that they won’t be entirely lost. I hope I’ve recorded everything above but I’ll leave these just in case.

Some random information about settings lest I forget

View > Text Editing > Show Titles in Scrivenings

Related Options in Scrivener Preferences (command comma)

Note especially “Do not show separators above titles”. Uncheck to get separators plus titles. I prefer that.

Spaces after titles

I discovered that when Scrivener is rendering folder titles, they are compiled as “# Title # “, with two trailing spaces, while documents are compiled as “# Title #”, with no spaces.

I modified the splitter script to say

Titles[filenumber] = title.strip[2..-3]

rather than

Titles[filenumber] = title[2..-3]

Note: This subsequently turned out to be an anomaly in how I had defined my layouts. The settings in the TL;DR section are correct as of this writing.

Changes needed for next

I’ve started another book for GitHub Pages. Here are the things I’ve had to redo or change.

I moved the format over and some stuff didn’t come with it. Such as …

YAML

The new book is showing Title / Author YAML. In Compile, the Metadata icon on the top right, delete title and author from the list.

Possibly, I should accept that YAML and allow for it somehow in splitter, since YAML on the front is fairly standard. OTOH, GitHub Pages don’t seem to mind.

Reference Chunk

The new book doesn’t have a reference chunk. That confuses splitter somehow, into treating the last page as a reference page. Most peculiar.

It has no pictures and links. Probably if I add a picture, it’ll get a reference chunk. I’ll try that.

That failed!! Scrivener, this time instead of compiling a remote reference to the image, put it in line. Arrgh.

I hacked an extra line into the end separator with an HTML comment in it, and that convinced splitter to use the empty bit at the end as a ref page.

What needs doing is to identify the reference page more explicitly, and then fix splitter to notice its absence and not use the last page as a ref page. Meh.

Why can’t Scrivener just let me have a project like the one I’ve already got? (I have inquired on the forum.)
